Audio Restoration – The Beatles’ First Radio Session – Teenager’s Turn – Here We Go

This seems to be as good of a place to start as any.  The date was March 7, 1962.  Pete Best was still their drummer. Paul was coming along nicely on the bass, and The Beatles recorded their radio debut at the Playhouse Theatre, Hulme, Manchester. The recording was for the show Teenager’s Turn – Here We Go. The band rehearsed their set at 3.45pm. In the evening, wearing suits for the very first time, The Beatles performed three cover versions: “Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream?)”, “Memphis, Tennessee” and “Please Mister Postman”. Together with the other three acts also appearing on the program, the recording took place between 8 and 8.45pm. The show was broadcast on the BBC Light Programme the following day between 5 and 5.30pm. The tape that exists comes from a fan who recorded it off the radio using a cheap microphone and a reel-to-reel.  Full of hiss and crackles, the tape has been bootlegged for historical purposes, but has not been an easy or enjoyable “listen” for the fans.  Finding a good source was difficult, but I managed to find one that was at least passable to work with.  Carefully removing layers of hiss without stripping away what sonics were left of the band itself…. was my first chore.  Equalizing the recording was my final task.  Enjoy!
